How to Aim a Hunting Rifle

When hunting, knowing the basics of aiming a hunting rifle will add more personal safety to the sport for you and your hunting group, as you will greatly reduce the chances of a harmful misfire.

First and foremost, while practicing how to aim a hunting rifle correctly, make sure to choose an area and a target that is away from any other person to eliminate the danger of a stray bullet during practice. In general, you will want to aim at a target that is approximately 100-200 yards away from you to give you the best accurate versatile experience while learning to aim a hunting rifle.

Once you are in place, the first thing you will need to do is grab the rifle stock (which is near your trigger guard) with your dominant hand. This is known as your trigger hand. Next, with your trigger hand firmly on the stock of the rifle, use the opposite hand to hold the rifle down the barrel for support and balance of the rifle. This will allow you to steady the rifle while you aim and later give you better control while you fire.

Now raise the rifle to your shoulder. Keeping both hands in position, rest the butt of the rifle against your shoulder. Point the rifle towards your target and line your eyes up through the rifle sight. You may have to squint to view it correctly.

You now should see two sights along the rifle -- one will have a small slot cut near the stock and the other is a small bead near the end of the rifle, sometimes painted red or orange. Adjust the end of the barrel to align the bead through the slot. Now adjust your line of fire so that both sights are lined up and focused on the target. From here, you are clear to fire and as long as you hold your rifle steady, you will succeed in hitting your target.

BLINDS:
